Suffragette (Gavron, 2015) Official Trailer

Trailer Conventions:

  • It defines itself as historical drama, as during the trailer it says that it is, "England, 1912"
  • The trailer showcases some of its stars, such as Helena Bonham Carter as we see a face on camera view of her.
  • The trailer also highlights the best bits, for example we see the main protagonist throwing a rock at the window, causing it to smash why demanding 'votes for women'.
  • The conversations between characters in the trailer are often one liners, the protagonists husband asserts "you're a wife, my wife, that's what you're meant to be"
  • The title of the film does not appear until the ending which creates a form of tension to know what the film is.
  • A voice over is used throughout the trailer using clips of speech from the film.
The Target Audience:
This film most notably seems to be aimed at women aged from 15 onwards and modern day feminists who wish to remember those who fought for equality in Britain. The film may also interest historians who are interested in the on goings of this specific time period.

How have the distributors targeted this audience?
The film was distributed by Pathe, a French distribution company, which has offices in the UK. Path productions, created the trailer which was aired in cinemas before similar films and TV ads were also aired. Posters were also put up at bus stops, on buses and on large billboards in central locations. The film also received a large amount of media press with the likes of the BBC, Independent and Guardian writing about it. All these methods helped the target audience of women and those with historical interests find put about the film.
