Spectre (Mendes, 2015)


Trailer Conventions:

  • The trailer highlights the 'best bits', including car chase scenes, plane crashes and Bond himself jumping from a high building
  • The trailer defines the film as an action film due to the inclusion of such extensive footage of action scenes
  • There is montage of fast paced clips, increasing in intensity until suddenly the clips stop and the title flashes onto the screen
  • The classic James Bond theme tune is playing in the background, not only does this alter the audience that it is apart of the iconic franchise but the music adds to the dramatic effect
  •  The conversations between the characters are short, blunt and to the point. Bond directly tells a man "I'm here to kill you"

The Target Audience:

The target audience of this film is those aged between 14-24, or those who are lifelong fans of the James Bond franchise

How the distributors reach the target audience:

The classic James Bond theme tune is used, this helps to engage avid James Bond fans. The use of Daniel Craig, the latest Bond icon gives the film the star appeal . Finally the distributors launched a massive advertising campaign, which included bus adverts, YouTube ads and posters.



My Response:

personally I found this trailer very exciting and thrilling and if I hadn't already seen the film I would go see it, but I would recommend this film to anyone who hasn't seen it because of this trailer

    these are used to promote the film, with it trending on twitter and fan pages being created as well as merchandise being available on the official website where you can find a vast verity of stuff including a spectre note pad.
  • the world premiere of the film was held in London in the Royal Albert Hall, on the 26th of October 2015.
  • in pre- production the film had a budget of $245,00,000. the filming of 'spectre' was filmed in multiple countries including Mexico for the opening scenes and other parts where filmed in Italy.
  • During the production all of the explosions was 100% authentic and real and the main explosion of the film that took place in Morocco was the biggest explosion to ever take place in cinematic history
  • For the 'day of the dead' scene they used 1500 extras and had to dress and paint all of these people it took them just over 75 minutes and had just under 50 professionals helping out as well as this the costume designer spent 6 months out in Mexico learning about the festival and ways of the locals so the costumes and scene can be as realistic as possible.
  • durning the production of the film they had 8 bespoke aston martin cars which was designed for there specific use like the stunt ones had roll cages while the ones to look good was made out of the best stuff.

Trailer conventions:


  • The best bits are highlighted throughout, such as when Katniss shoots down aircraft's from the Capitol using only a bow and arrow.
  • The film is established as a sci-film through the use of galactic costume and weaponry.
  • The stars in the film are showcased throughout, Jennifer Lawrence portrays the main protagonist, and both Josh Hutchinson and Liam Hemsworth as her love interests.
  • The dialogue used its extremely short, Katniss simply says to Peta "you're a liar"
  • The title does not appear until the final seconds of the trailer
  • Intense and dramatic music is played throughout and becomes increasingly fast in order to build up tension.

The target audience of this film is those aged between the ages of 12-18.

How the distributor targets this audience:

The distributor makes it attractive to young people by highlighting the fact that the film features of the moment actors such as Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutchinson. The film also was widely advertised on the sides of busses and social media, two places which young people are bound to see

Suffragette (Gavron, 2015) Official Trailer






Trailer Conventions:

  • It defines itself as historical drama, as during the trailer it says that it is, "England, 1912" 
  • The trailer showcases some of its stars, such as Helena Bonham Carter as we see a face on camera view of her.
  • The trailer also highlights the best bits, for example we see the main protagonist throwing a rock at the window, causing it to smash why demanding 'votes for women'.
  • The conversations between characters in the trailer are often one liners, the protagonists husband asserts "you're a wife, my wife, that's what you're meant to be" 
  • The title of the film does not appear until the ending which creates a form of tension to know what the film is.
  • A voice over is used throughout the trailer using clips of speech from the film.
The Target Audience:
This film most notably seems to be aimed at women aged from 15 onwards and modern day feminists who wish to remember those who fought for equality in Britain. The film may also interest historians who are interested in the on goings of this specific time period.

How have the distributors targeted this audience?
The film was distributed by Pathe, a French distribution company, which has offices in the UK. Path productions, created the trailer which was aired in cinemas before similar films and TV ads were also aired. Posters were also put up at bus stops, on buses and on large billboards in central locations. The film also received a large amount of media press with the likes of the BBC, Independent and Guardian writing about it. All these methods helped the target audience of women and those with historical interests find put about the film.

'SIXTEEN' is an urban thriller about an African former child soldier called Jumah was brought to London by Laura, an aid worker who he now lives with. Jumah is about to turn 16 in two days and wants to leave his violent past behind him. Things seem to have taken a turn for the better with Jumah now; he has a sweet but tentative romance blossoming with a girl at school. But then Jumah witnesses a stabbing and the people involved want to make sure that he says nothing to the police about what he saw that night. Pressure mounts as violence forces it's way back into Jumah's life.
